4/11 Edgewood College Student Research Conference

Manpreet and Marie at Edgewood College, April 2011
In April, Manpreet and Marie presented their research at a poster session at Edgewood College's research conference. They explained what they had learned over the course of the past two years as members of Project CRYSTAL, and talked about being listed as authors on a paper published in a peer-reviewed science journal! Congratulations!

10/10 – 12/10 Biochemistry cover

The cover of Biochemistry
For three months (October-December 2010) the cover of the American Chemical Society's peer-reviewed journal Biochemistry featured crystals grown by Marie and Manpreet. The results from the crystals that they grew were very exciting for the laboratory. According to Professor Holden: "We had no idea that this C-methyltransferase contained a zinc ion, but there it was in the electron density map. We had no idea that the middle and C-terminal domains would be structurally similar, but yes they were, thereby suggesting that this methyltransferase arose via gene duplication! And in the 20 some odd years that I have been working on enzymes involved in carbohydrate metabolism, I have never seen a nucleotide-linked keto sugar bound in an active site."
